Upper Missouri NWSR Canoe Trip 2009

Jacob and Pete's 2009 Lewis & Clark Adventure

This winter - when the weather gods were still dishing it out like they only can in Chicago - I read Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose.  In this excellent retelling of the adventures and travails of Captains (well sort of) Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Corps of Discovery, the author repeatedly makes mention of hiking, canoeing, and camping sections of the trail with his own family. Thus was born the idea for a trip this summer with my dad.

Initially the plan was to canoe the Missouri River in Montana for a few days, followed by a multi-day hike in the Bitterroot Mountains in Idaho. As planning progressed however, it became apparent that these should be separate trips. This website is a record of the first of those trips, a nine-day, 149 mile canoe journey from Ft. Benton to the James Kipp Recreation Area in Montana. We kept a journal throughout the trip, and the text on these pages is a verbatim copy of that journal. Use the links at the top of the page to navigate our day by day narrative.
